HUSUM - MARITIME WORLD (HUSUM PORT)

Gateway to the North Frisian Islands and "Halligen"

The charming harbour town Husum is the centre of Schleswig-Holstein’s North Sea coast and is well-known as the gateway to the North Frisian Islands and "Halligen". In the city life of Husum the harbour - with the inner harbour and the outer harbour - always played an important role.

Strolling along the harbour area in the inner harbour or making business in the outer harbour - the Husum port has many appearances: Shrimp fishing and the corn trade, the waterway police, marine conservation and coastal protection, boat trips and sailing, ship repairs and wind energy technology… …

In Husum even short dock repairs have a long tradtion

Previously, the shipyard was much more prominent and located where the Town Hall is now. Today, all the ship repair and maintenance work is carried out in two dry docks in the outer harbour. You can learn more about the history of Husum’s docks in the North Frisian Maritime Museum (Schiffahrtsmuseum Nordfriesland).

HUSUM - WHERE THE TIDES DETERMINE LIFE (COASTAL PROTECTION)

Where people and sea live togehter

The construction of dykes and other coastal protection measures are part of life on the North Sea - just like the shrimps. The population has protected the North Sea coast from the natural force of the sea for nearly 2,000 years.

Husum has the competence regarding the way people can live with tidal seas and since 2008 has been the site of the Schleswig-Holstein Agency for Coastal Defence, National Park and Marine Conservation.

And, as in 1962 when storm surges cause the dykes to break and the “Blanke Hans” is raging, among others, the German Army in Husum is a reliable partner.

You can find out more about the coastal protection in the “NordseeMuseum Husum” (North Sea Museum).
